Psathyrella spadicea with Yew

Postby Roy Betts » Mon Apr 03, 2017 2:35 pm

The Spring 'Forayer' has just arrived with a piece by Graham Mattock about Psathyrella spadicea associated with Taxus.
He comments on a collection from Mendip Lodge Wood made on 27/9/14. This was found by John Bailey, identified by me in the field and later confirmed by John following microscopic examination. I have to say that I can't remember the cap colour, but given that most Psathyrella dry out much paler it could indeed have been pale (Kits van Waveren says the cap dries "... out from centre to sordid greyish yellow sometimes with pinkish hue, pale ochre at centre...").
Interestingly, John also spotted this species at the base of a Yew at Tyntesfield - on 26th January this year! Certainly an unusually late occurrence - my 9 previous records span July - December.
