Another myxo?

Postby Richard Scott » Fri Jul 02, 2010 5:56 pm

Found 2nd July growing on a scar in a beech tree. It has been there since last year at least.
White growth appearing in the scar and along all faults up the tree. Looks like small bits of styrofoam.

Under the microscope it seems to consist of large ovoid bodies filled with other different types of particle.
Around the ovoid bodies can be found lots of long strands like flagella but they are quite big.

It's really hard to tell what it might be from the pictures, but I don't think it looks like a Myxo. Sorry!

Here are a few more microphotos of this weird specimen, it appears to be growing on many beech trees in the area in which I first discovered it.
The 3rd picture is particularly weird.

Possibly the weird bit of 'hypha' in the last photo is airborne contamination, and it get us no nearer to an ID.

Stumped !
