Adding Congo Red to KOH very quickly forms small red star shaped crystals.
The first time I saw this I thought I had found a new microscopic body on a fungi.

We make up many litres of Melzers reagent for members' use during a season. But I generally recommend purchase in the 20ml quantity rather than 100ml. because it is not cheap, there is enough chloral hydrate in 100ml to knock out most of Basingstoke, and it would take you an awful long time to get through 100ml. We do supply it without the chloral hydrate on request, but, rather as with other forum contributors, I have been using the same batch for several years with no obvious deterioration.

p.s in case of a flood of complaints, I have nothing personal against Basingstoke. It could equally well have been Billericay or even Bridport.
