Slide preparation

Slide preparation

Postby davidharries » Mon Oct 26, 2009 5:57 pm

I find that a 50/50 mix of glycerol and water is ideal for simple slide preparations as the glycerol reduces the rate of evaporation of water from the edge of the cover slip so results in a more stable preparation. However, I find that my "stock" bottle of glycerol/water develops a floc' after a couple weeks or so - presumably caused by bacterial or fungus growth.

I would welcome any suggestions for something (readily accessible) I could add to the container which would prevent or minimise this effect?

For what it is worth David, I have used Hibitane in the past. It comes as a 5% concentrate of chlorhexidine gluconate, should not affect your slide preparations, and is effective against a wide range of bacteria and fungi. It is available from most high street chemists.
