The Fat Lady is about to Sing

Last night the Totals Search module went online in CATE2 and this addition adequately demonstrates the awesome capability of the system. The user can now analyse, at a glance, the data relating to a species, a place, a grid reference, an ecosystem, a recorder . . . .

Try entering e.g. Nottinghamshire in the VC box, and when the summary totals appear, run your mouse cursor over the grey boxes and see what happens. Even if you don't have log in registration, which reveals place names and grid references, the capacity for analysis of records is still in a class of its own. As John Roberts has said: It would be very difficult to put up a case now, for CATE not being the most superior data base for fungi. possibly anywhere.

Mapping should be on this weekend, and then the fat lady really should be able to mount the podium to sing!

Now what CATE needs above all is for the many recorders who are using it to become ambassadors for its remarkable standards. The Totals module demonstrates very clearly why we have consistently claimed that CATE is the best way forward, to arrive at the essential Important Fungus Areas lists, accurate BAP lists and the long-delayed Red Data list.

David Edington has been doing a first rate job in conveying the benefits of CATE to a sometimes adverse audience in the WAB fungus forum. But if we are to make a real success of CATE and to make the huge investment of rime and funding justified, we have to bring in more of the sceptics. The growing volume of recorders now using the online recording need to get the message across of just how advanced this system is to those that are still reliant on outmoded, inaccurate, and time-consuming recording programmes based on Excel or Access.
