The Great Encyclopaedia of Mushrooms: A nice popular work.

The Great Encyclopaedia of Mushrooms: A nice popular work.

I thought I'd mention this book, as it is both cheap, and very very good. It is a popular work, so there are no microscopic details, and it only covers about 500 species. But the descriptions are first rate, the photos are large and very well done, and all in all this is a wonderful book, and an excellent first guide for anyone with an interest in fungi. I bought mine for £5 on the high street, but Amazon sell them for £4.99 including postage, which is a bargain. This book won't help you much with most Inocybe and Cortinarius, but you'll learn to recognise some of the more common fungi, and the main genera. This also makes a nice coffee table book as the photos are so well done.

I've had my copy for years and must admit I've never properly looked at it, so have just done and for £5 all I can say is "What are you waiting for people - go out and place your order tomorrow" ! It's a steal.
Also, it is so well put together, just nail on 4 legs and you do indeed have yourself a coffee table.

I purchased this book whilst on holiday in the New Forest. It has got some great pictures and good descriptions, well worth the price. :P

My copy arrived about six months ago when it was first mentioned on the forum. It's an absolute joy to handle, look at and read. Ideally suited for the beginner but I wouldn't dissuade anyone buying it.
