Description

General: Cream or brownish-yellow rosette of thin, tough lobes; solitary or gregarious in rows, on soil in mixed woods, generally with beech.
Dimensions: 3-10cm dia.
Fruit Body: Upper surface (or individual lobes), orange-brown to darker brown, sometimes weakly zoned, irregularly wavy; lower hymenial surface white, cream, brownish-yellow, villose, longitudinally furrowed and veined; when damp elastic, tough; when dry, brittle.
Spores: Hyaline, smooth, broadly ellipsoid, with distinct apiculus, 7.0-9.0 x 4.0-5.5 µm. Basidia 4 spored; leptocystidia slenderly clavate.
Odour: Not distinctive.
Taste: Sour.
Chemical Tests: None.
Occurrence: Autumn.

 

Qualifying criterion: 4.7: very rare species with restricted range
Justification: more than 50% decline in hectads pre- and post-1960
Threats: changes in land use, tree felling, soil compaction
Action Required: Site protection and monitoring against habitat loss and degradation; ecological assessment
