Choosing the Right Field Guide

The bookshelves carry a confusing array of reference publications in various shapes and sizes, many of them claiming to be 'definitive guides' to mushrooms and toadstools. When choosing a good reference book there are a number of considerations to make. Do you want a simple guide to put in your pocket to use when out and about or something more substantial to refer to at home? If you want a comprehensive reference book for home use, in larger format and with an extensive list of species including detailed descriptions and full colour photographs, shot in situ and from all angles, the Encyclopedia of Fungi, published by Frances Lincoln at £16.99 in paperback and £30.00 in hardcover, is one of the better choices with 384 pages including over 1,000 species. The first edition was published in 1995 and it has since been substantially revised and revamped. It is written by the C.E.O. of the Association of British Fungus Groups, Michael Jordan, who has more than 30 years of experience in field mycology.

A small handy guide will offer some of your needs, but don't expect it to provide all the answers. With a book of this kind it is best to go for colour drawings rather than photographs. One to recommend is the Mushrooms and Toadstools of Britain and Europe by Courtecuisse & Duhem, published by Collins.
The Encyclopedia of Fungi of Britain and Europe can be obtained in author signed copies (paperback) from the ABFG at £21.00, including packing and postage, and from most good bookshops at the R.R.P. It is also available from Amazon.
