Description

General: Large pure white fruit body, cushion-like with long pendulous spines; solitary, from wounds on living broad-leaf trees, also from felled trunks; favouring beech.
Dimensions: 10-20cm deep x 10-25cm dia.
Fruit Body: White, cushion-like, upper surface smooth, fertile hymenium on the under surface covering pendulous, elongated conical spines; flesh: concolorous, firm.
Spores: Hyaline, finely warty or spiny, sub-spherical, amyloid, some with droplets, 6.0-6.5 x 4.0-5.5 µm . Basidia 4 spored; cystidia cylindrical.
Odour: Not distinctive.
Taste: Not distinctive. Edible
Chemical Tests: None.
Occurrence: Late Summer to Early Autumn.

 

Qualifying criterion: 1 : internationally threatened species
Justification: threatened in over 50% of the countries within its European range
Threats: forestry operations and inappropriate woodland management policy
Action Required: Survey and monitoring; protection against habitat loss and degradation; site liaison and management.
