Description

General: Medium sized, dark brown agaric with greasy cap, yellow gills and dry stem; in small trooping groups on soil amongst mown or cropped grass in pastures favouring limestone slopes.
Dimensions: Cap 5-7cm dia; stem 5-7cm tall x 0.7-1.2cm dia.
Cap: Dark brown or sepia, conical or campanulate, becoming more flattened and broadly umbonate, greasy or viscid; flesh: yellowish, thin, fairly fragile.
Gills: Bright yellow, adnexed or free, broad, fairly distant.
Stem: Yellowish but tending to blacken, more pallid at the base, more or less equal; ring absent.
Spores: Hyaline, smooth, ellipsoid, non-amyloid, droplets, 8-11 x 5-7 µm . Basidia 4 spored; cystidia absent.
Odour: Not Distinctive.
Taste: Not Distinctive.
Chemical Tests: None.
Occurrence: Late Summer to Autumn.

 

Qualifying criterion: 4.4: uncommon species associated with unimproved grasslands
Justification: current BAP action for this species needs to be continued
Threats: habitat destruction, agricultural improvement, neglect of traditional grasslands, afforestation
Action Required: Research into grassland waxcap ecology; monitoring; protection and management of sites.
