Description

General: Pale brown bulb surmounting a buff or brown, star shaped base, which raises the spore sac above the surrounding substrate; solitary or in small groups on sandy soil on woodland margins.
Dimensions: Unopened bulb 2-5cm dia; expanded 3-10cm dia.
Fruit Body: Exoperidium brown splitting into 5-12 rays, at first pallid buff, later brown; endoperidium greyish-brown, sessile, sub-spherical, smooth; opening by several pores.
Gleba: At first pallid becoming brown.
Spores: 4-6µm, sub-spherical, irregularly verrucose. Basidia 2-4 spored; cystidia absent.
Odour: Not Distinctive.
Taste: Not Distinctive.
Chemical Tests: None.
Occurrence: Late Summer to Autumn.

 

Qualifying criterion: 1: internationally threatened species
Justification: threatened in over 50% of countries in its European range
Threats: habitat destruction, changes in land use
Action Required: Detection in sandy areas, survey and monitoring; protection against habitat loss and degradation; increased awareness.
