Description

General: Smallish flesh-coloured to orange-cream agaric with ochre-brown gills and yellowish-orange stem; clustered on rotten conifer wood, especially stumps.
Dimensions: Cap 2-6cm dia; stem 5-9cm tall x 0.5-1.0cm dia.
Cap: Pallid to deep orange-red, sometimes with a pinkish tinge, more saffron towards the margin; at first hemispherical then convex to flattened; dull, smooth, greasy or viscid, margin with whitish veil remnants when young: flesh orange-brown, spotting black after a time, thick.
Gills: Cream then ochre to reddish-brown, spotting black where bruised, narrow, notched.
Stem: Cream-coloured fibrillose scales on yellow to orange-brown background, pallid and smooth at the apex above faint ring zone.
Spores: Light brown, smooth, ellipsoid, with no visible germ pore, 6-8 x 3.5-4.5 µm . Basidia 4 spored; cheilocystidia cylindrical to lageniform; pleurocystidia modified as chrysocystidia.
Odour: Not Distinctive.
Taste: Not Distinctive.
Chemical Tests: None.
Occurrence: Late Summer to Autumn.

 

Qualifying criterion: 4.7: very rare species saprotrophic on dead conifer wood
Justification: declined by more than 50% pre- and post-1960 and recorded at only one location since 1960
Threats: removal of dead wood
Action Required: Survey and monitoring; protection against habitat loss and degradation; site liaison and management; ecological research.
