DescriptionGeneral: Smallish bolete with dark reddish-brown cap and distinctive bright yellow gills; stem flushed cap colour; solitary on soil, often acidic near coniferous and broad leaf trees.Dimensions: Cap 4-6cm dia; stem 2-6cm tall x 0.8-1.5cm dia. Cap: Dark reddish brown, finely downy; at first hemispherical becoming flattened with low blunt umbo and incurved margin; flesh pallid yellow, cap-coloured beneath the cuticle, thick, spongy. Stem: Yellowish but flushed cap colour in the mid section, smooth or slightly pruinose, more or less equal or tapering below, ring absent; flesh concolorous with cap and fairly tough. |
Spores: Light greenish-yellow, smooth, ellipsoid, with drops, 10.5-12.5 x 3.5-4.5 µm. Basidia 4 spored; cystidia abundant, fusiform to clavate. Odour: Not Distinctive. Taste: Not Distinctive or slightly nutty. Chemical Tests: None. Occurrence: Late Summer to Autumn. |
