Description

General: Pale buff or deeper coloured rosette of thin lobes; on soil in broad leaf woods.
Dimensions: 5-25cm dia; lobes 0.2-0.4cm thick.
Fruit Body: Upper surface (or individual lobes) buff or brown with darker brown concentric zones, smooth, wavy; lower hymenial surface concolorous, thin; when damp elastic, tough; when dry, brittle.
Spores: Hyaline, smooth, sub-cylindrical, amyloid, 4.5-6.5 x 4-5 µm . Basidia 4 spored; cystidia vermiform with swollen bases.
Odour: Not Distinctive.
Taste: Not Distinctive.
Chemical Tests: None.
Occurrence: Late Summer to Autumn.

Qualifying criterion: 4.1: rare species with nearly 50% of the European population restricted to UK sites
Justification: associated with a severely declining habitat of ancient veteran trees
Threats: habitat destruction, felling of host trees, vegetation control by machinery in surrounding areas where it fruits
Action Required: Survey and monitoring; protection against habitat loss and degradation; site liaison and management
