Description

General: Resupinate, sulphur-yellow spiny bracket attached tightly to the substrate; favouring knotholes or wounds of mature veteran apple trees.
Dimensions: Variable dia.
Fruit Body: Sulphur-yellow, waxy, developing wine red discolorations; fertile surface of pallid to bright yellow subulate spines hanging vertically downwards and densely packed, 0.5-1.0cm long x 0.2-0.6mm thick ; sclerocysts in the flesh.
Spores: Brown, coarsely tuberculate, sub-spherical, non-amyloid, 6.5-8.0 x 5-6 µm. Basidia 4 spored; cystidia absent.
Odour: Sweetish-fruity.
Taste: Mild, fruity.
Chemical Tests: None.
Occurrence: Late Summer to Autumn.

 

Qualifying criterion: 4.1: very rare species with restricted range on elderly apple trees
Justification: range has declined since 1980 despite increased recording since then, due to severe decline in suitable habitat
Threats: removal of dead wood and changes to orchard management
Action Required: liaison with land owners and promotion of traditional orchard conservation.
