Russula viscida?

species identification

Russula viscida?

Postby GeoffDann » Sat Aug 29, 2015 2:02 pm

Found in a park in Hastings, growing under some sort of imported ornamental pine. I have no microscopy available, but everything seems to fit. One quarter peeling, taste very slightly hot, cap sticky when wet, flesh quite hard, bruises brown at the base of the stem. Previously only recorded in central and northern Kent, so this would be a first record for East Sussex, maybe?

Is this enough for a positive ID, or is there something else it could be? Looks like the right ID to me, but Russula are tricky when you don't have a microscope...

First of all. No, I do not think this is enough for a positive ID!

Several Russula species (as well as other genera) are also somewhat viscid when wet

This is what Kibby states in the species description (and what can be inferred from his keys) in his great work, 'The Genus Russula of Great Britain'

Cuticle colour: vinaceous-red, purple-brown to ochraceous (your photos appear to suggest, blackish, greying with age)
Taste: mild (T rating) to slightly acrid (S rating) in the lamellae (you suggested slightly hot which may fall into the acrid camp)
Lamellae: ivory to cream, fairly widely spaced, arcuate, anastomising at their base (cannot see enough details from your photos here)
Peeling: one fifth of cuticle (H rating - that may be close enough to one's guesstimation of a quarter)
Stipe: white with a fine crust of yellowish-brown, granulose veil at base (no sign of this)
Odour: pleasant of honey or fruit (you never mentioned any scent).

Anyway, I doubt this is sp viscidi, and I certainly would not hazard a guess without spore colour, microscopy and/or chemical tests.

I agree that microscopy is needed. My first thought was that it could be the common R. parazurea. This can be dark grey brown and Kibby states "...especially with Quercus or Pinus".

Apart from the few obvious ones I would advise to leave the naming of Russulas alone without full microscopy. Colour is hardly a guideline with many in this complex - a real bugger of a group that has me tearing what little hair I have left...out! I get the odd breakthrough now and again but only if material is fresh and ready for further scrutiny. I don't worry about it though, I take great comfort in not being alone ;)
