Some summer finds

Some interesting fungi found this summer

(i) Ganoderma resinaceum at one of 2 new sites where I have found this bracket this year.

Found at the base of a mature living oak (July 2016)

(ii) Young Volvariella bombycina emerging from their volvae

On a nature reserve, in a large hollow/crevice of a living oak tree (July 2016)

(iii) Mitrula paludosa

With sphagnum moss in clear flowing spring water (May 2016)

I'd not seen G. resinaceum till last August when it was spotted on an Oak in parkland on one of our forays.

Well, I don't deny that I would prefer that this forum was more active. Facebook seems in vogue, yet I cannot understand why it is - searching it is a farce, so I don't use it any more (though some of my mates do).

Any post is better than none, is it not?

Another nice find whilst out for a walk - Rubroboletes legaliae (syn: Boletus legaliae)

A first recording for both Sussex counties (West and East) in either the CATE or FRDBI databases, though I am sure I have found it before.

Cap cuticle discolours dark clarety purple on damage being inflicted (pinched), reticulum on most of stipe, discolours blue on handling. Pores orange-red discolouring dark-blue on bruising. Tubes olivaceous green/yellow (discolours). Cap flesh very pale lemon, discolours blue on cutting.

Found in parkland on grassy soil under mature oak. Note the rosaceous/vinaceous overtones of the pileus

As it happens, I have found a second site for Rubroboletus legaliae in a country lane about 5 miles from the other site. There were about 8 specimens in various stages of development scattered on the roadside verge around the location of an oak tree. The younger ones have a much lighter cap and redder pores than the more mature ones. It also appears that slugs are very fond of them.

Despite the slug damage, one can clearly see the reticulation on the upper-stipe fading towards the stipe-base

Flesh in cap and stipe discolours blue when cut, as do the tubes (stipe discolours blue when bruised).
